What is an LED Video Wall?
An LED wall is a large format display that is built in-place (where it is being installed) using individual tiles. These tiles can contain anywhere from 260,000 to 25 million individual LEDs in every square meter. Because each “pixel” is its own light source, LED walls have great brightness and are great for outdoor use in cases like event screens, billboards, and arenas.
What is an LCD Video Wall?
LCD video walls use multiple liquid crystal displays, similar to a regular consumer TV. These displays are all linked together and connected to a video wall controller, which splits the incoming signal, scales the resolution, and sends each display its part of the original signal. These video walls can be less expensive than LED video walls, but are not as bright, and have bezels that get in the way of a seamless picture.
What is the difference between LED and LCD video walls?
LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) uses polarizing filters and liquid crystals to modulate a backlight. LED (Direct View LED) generates light directly from RGB pixels, offering superior seamlessness and brightness. OLED is a hybrid using a membrane system where light is generated by pixels, providing high contrast but at a higher cost for large formats compared to Direct View LED, which is now emerging in the consumer market as MicroLED.
How big are LED tiles?
LED tiles common sizes are 500x500mm and 600x338mm. The 500x500mm square panels are ideal for sports and custom events. The 600x338mm panels follow a 16:9 aspect ratio, allowing standard widescreen configurations with the same panel count horizontally and vertically, simplifying integration with video wall controllers.
How much does an LCD Wall cost?
LCD walls are generally more cost-effective than LED for close-range viewing. High-brightness, slim-bezel 55” panels range from $5,000-$10,000. Specialized mounting systems for service access can add $3,000 to $10,000 depending on structural requirements.
How much does an LED Wall cost?
LED wall pricing is driven by pixel pitch, total area, and mounting complexity. Individual panels range from $1,000 to $5,000. Power supplies, controllers, and hardware typically account for 30-40% of the total ecosystem investment.
